Confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) reach 5000 worldwide
This morning, confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) totalled 5.132 in 30 countries according to information from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Among these are two confirmed cases in Norway, the first cases reported in that country, two in Sweden and one in Denmark. The number of confirmed deaths from the influenza is now 53, the largest number reported in Mexico, or 48, three in the USA, one in Canada and one in Costa Rica.
So far, no cases of the influenza A(H1N1) have been diagnosed in Iceland and noone has been admitted to the Landspitali University Hospital with influenza-like illness.
For the time being, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not changed the level of influenza pandemic alert from the current phase 5. Even though the level of alert were to be raised to its highest level (phase 6), Iceland does not intend to change its current level of preparedness while the influenza symptoms remain mild.
