Confirmed cases still on the rise
The total number of confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) was 5.935 this morning, in 31 countries across the world, according to information from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Among these are two confirmed cases in Finland, which means that the influenza has now stricken all the Nordic Countries except Iceland, Greenland and the Faeroe Islands.
Clearly, the influenza A(H1N1) virus has spread to almost all the continents of the world and transmission has been confirmed in an increasing number of countries. The largest number of confirmed cases is in the USA, 3.009 cases.
The number of confirmed deaths from the influenza is now 63, the highest number reported in Mexico, or 58, three in the USA, one in Canada and one in Costa Rica.
So far, no cases of the influenza A(H1N1) have been diagnosed in Iceland and nobody has been admitted to the Landspitali University Hospital with influenza-like illness.
The level of alert remains unchanged in Iceland. Doctors are urged to send samples from patients with influenza-like illness for diagnosis and give treatment with anti-viral drugs to patients with severe symptoms. Prophylactic treatment is not reccommend at this point.
