The second case of influenza A(H1N1) confirmed in Iceland

A sixty-year old man living in the capital area has been diagnosed with influenza A(H1N1), the second case of the disease confirmed in Iceland. His family and other close contacts of the man in question are being monitored but so far no other cases have been confirmed.

The man arrived in Iceland from the USA on 3 June but did not fall ill until after his arrival, which means that there is no reason to assume that he may have spread the disease on his journey to Iceland.

This is the second case of influenza A(H1N1) reported in Iceland. The first one was confirmed on 22 May and also involved a man coming from the USA.

The level of preparedness in Iceland regarding the influenza A(H1N1) epidemic remains unchanged and the coordination work carried out by the authorities concerned continues. Regional response plans for an influenza pandemic are being discussed these days at meetings across the country held by the Chief Epidemiologist for Iceland and the Civil Protection Department of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police.

  •       ECDC reports today that over 26.000 cases of influenza A(H1N1) have now been confirmed in the world. Close to 1.200 of these are reported in EU/EFTA countries.
  •       Deaths from influenza A(H1N1) are now 139, of which 106 have occurred in Mexico and 27 in the USA.
