News on influenza A(H1N1)

27.07.2009

Thirty four cases of influenza A(H1N1)v have been confirmed in Iceland. Also, a note on a busy weekend ahead.

Within the last 48 hours eleven additional cases of influenza A(H1N1)v have been confirmed in Iceland. The total number of cases confirmed is therefore 34.
The eleven recent cases are two boys 15 years of age arriving to Iceland 19 July from a soccer game in Gothenburg, Sweden, a Spanish girl 17 years of age attending an ongoing international scout meeting in Iceland, a woman 28 years of age arriving from Australia 19 July, a boy 5 years of age arriving from Thailand 21 July, a man 29 years of age arriving from China 21 July, and two women 17-27 years of age and three males 27-39 years of age and none of them did have a travel history nor did they have contacts with known influenza cases in Iceland.
None of these eleven cases had serious illness.
A note on a busy weekend ahead.
It should be noticed that the coming weekend is the busiest time for travels in Iceland and there will be a lot of gatherings of people all around the country. With respect to the present mildness of the new influenza pandemic a ban on public gatherings has not been issued. Nevertheless it must be stressed that everyone with influenza like illness (sudden fever, malaise, headache, sore throat, and coughing) should stay at home for seven days after the beginning of symptoms, take care and avoid infecting others.
Even though the pandemic influenza is presently usually relatively mild it must be kept in mind that people with underlying diseases may be more sensitive for the influenza than healthy people and may catch a more severe disease.

Notices concerning influenza preparedness measures in Iceland will continue to be issued on www.influensa.is, in both Icelandic and English.
